Hi Reader When I started my bookkeeping practice in 2020, a business coach friend asked what the top 3 things I wanted from it were. The only one I can remember with certainty was ‘agency,’ because that’s the one that got me a funny look. Mind you, this was a couple of years after I left teaching. I was on the tail end of burnout, and all I could think about was being able to pee whenever I wanted to, never mind all the bigger things I had wanted to experience and create with my students. Today, I was reminded of how important choice still is to me. I’ll admit, I’ve been in and out of fear more frequently lately. Between our provincial elections up here and the elections in the US, things have been tense. A candidate in my riding had a history that included pressuring the police to pursue the University of Victoria for having BIPOC clubs because it was 'discriminatory'. Seeing all the signs supporting him made me wonder how many people I pass on the street think I should only be allowed to be here if I ignore my fears and give up my connections to my ancestry. But today, in a co-working session, a friend had on her list, “focus on what I can control.” And what a beautiful reminder. Is there still uncertainty out there? Yes. Am I completely powerless? No. There are things we can control. I can control what’s in my space. So early this morning, I took out the garbage, compost and recycling. And my space feels a little better. And it reminded me why I started this coaching business anyways. Because I wanted to help people remember they have choice, and that their money can continue to support their choices. So today, perhaps my hope for you is to remember where you have choice. Things on my list for today:

Hey Reader Every time I hit this time of year, I feel slightly like I've been run over by a bus. It can be hard remembering what's happened over the last year. Flipping back through planners, journals and calendars is a lifesaver. This year? I'm celebrating: Friggin beautiful, kind words from clients (the first round of group coaching is closing this week, and I might be feeling a little sappy about it) Finally feeling like I know my messaging and positioning (how amazing is it when you hear...
Hey Reader, This morning I realized there are only 48 days left in the year. Can you believe it? It crept up on me. It feels like a good moment to pause and reflect. It doesn't have to be a huge pause, mind you. It can just be a little pause to recalibrate. It's so easy to get swept up in the busy-ness of the season. And global politics don't help. It's easy to feel like you're riding the waves in someone else's boat. It's easy to forget where we have influence. So I'm practicing remembering...
Hey Reader, So it might not surprise you to learn that I could nerd out about data all day. Man, I love talking theory and playing with concepts. But I'm not going to do that to you! Instead, I'm going to try to keep it to the practical stuff, because data can really help us get where we want to go. I was in a couple of conversations last week about goals. In my world, it seems to be that time of year. We're in the last fiscal quarter, planners for 2025 are launching, and people are looking...
